Season to Open Soon

The Galesburg Daily Mail reported that the quail hunting season would begin on November 1, 1900, and continue until December 20th.

 

According to reports there were lots of quail in the land, but it might be rather hard work getting to them. There had been considerable rain lately and the fields were wet and soggy. The quail at that time of year feed in cornfields and the hunters would have to go there to find them.

 

Old timers said when the fields were dry there would be fine shooting as the game was plentiful. Coon hunting was also occupying the minds of some local sports. The coon dogs had been in training for some time and were ready to get into the woods.

 

The season for fox and black squirrels was also open in Illinois. Hunters could shoot grouse, pheasant or partridge as well. The prairie chicken  season had been open between August 15th and October 1st. The season was shorter as the birds were becoming fewer.

 

During the nineteenth century market hunters exploited animals and birds for money. Many sold several kinds of birds to hotels for serving on their menus.  Water fowl were especially popular. Feathers were used to decorate women's hats and stuff pillows and furniture. River mussels and clams were a large market as well. The shells were stamped into buttons for shirts and underwear.

 

The Migratory Bird Act passed by Congress in 1918 regulated hunting. More than one species had already been hunted to extinction. Some of the states, including Illinois, had earlier set seasons for hunting in order to preserve the wildlife within in its borders.

 

Today quail hunting frequently requires a trip to Texas or another southern state. Large tracts of land are maintained as habitat suitable for quail hunting. It has become an expensive hobby.

 

A young Carl Sandburg had once tried to hunt sparrows with a slingshot. He managed to kill one bird. Then he had to cut off the head and take it to the City Clerk's office to collect the bounty. It wasn't much of a fun experience for him.
