The title doesn't refer to a secret handshake. It is the name used for influenza in the 1890s.
 
In the February 1, 1899. issue of the Galesburg Evening Mail, the City Health Officer. Dr. Chalmers, was quoted by a reporter as saying there was an epidemic of influenza in town. It was the most serious occurance in the past several years. He also said it was due to atmospheric conditions and it was causing much suffering in the lower classes.
 
At that time physicians thought influenza was caused by a bacteria. The cause was not identified as a virus until 1955. They knew it spread rapidly and could cause serious complications and prolonged loss of strength in their patients.
 
The first epidemic in the American Colonies was recorded in 1647, not that many years after the Pilgrims had landed at Plymouth. From 1880 to 1883 a quarter of the United States population was affected by the disease. The epidemics which occurred in 1898 through 1900 are thought to have been caused by the H2N2 strain of the virus with which we are familiar today.
 
The term Influenza was first used in 1358. It was thought the stars influenced the cyclical pattern of the disease. The northern and southern hemispheres each have their own seasons of flu because winter happens at different times of the year. Near the equator flue can occur at any time of the year.
 
 A number of epidemics have begun in Asia and spread around the world. The pandemic of 1918-1919 is believed to have begun in that part of the world. The movement of troops during World War I contributed to the spread of disease. The virus was especially deadly among young soldiers confined  in training camps and on ships traveling to war zones.
 
The viruses which cause influenza have now been identified as A, B and C. Their molecular composition changes frequently. A person can have flu one year and develop antibodies to that strain. The next year the virus probably has changed and an individual will lack defenses against the new strain of virus. The World Health Organization determines the composition of flu vaccines each year. Type C virus is the mildest form so individuals can survive it more easily.
 
Influenza is known for its quick onset. It affects many people in a particular geographic location. It attacks the respiratory system. The symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, headaches, extreme fatigue and muscle aches. It is most life-threatening to children, pregnant women, people with chronic health problems and the elderly.
 
Each year there are more than 3 to 5 millions cases of flu in the world which result in 250,000 to 500,000 deaths. So be sure to remember and practice the sanitary rules your teachers taught you in school. Wash hands frequently, cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze, get plenty of rest and fresh air.
